When people think about Mountain View, Arkansas, they usually think about our beautiful Ozark Mountains, the White River, and of course, our music. But there's another part of Mountain View that I think deserves a little more attention, and that's our incredible arts community.
One of the things I love about Mountain View is how many people move here because they want a different lifestyle. Some are ready to retire, some want to get away from the hustle and bustle, and others are looking for a place where they can spend more time doing the things they love.
For people who enjoy art, working with their hands, or learning something new, the Arkansas Craft School is a wonderful example of what our little town has to offer. And you don't have to be an artist to enjoy it!
What Is the Arkansas Craft School?
Located just off the historic courthouse square at 101 N. Peabody Avenue, the Arkansas Craft School is a nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching and preserving both traditional and contemporary arts and crafts.
The school began as the educational arm of the Arkansas Craft Guild before becoming its own nonprofit organization in 2007. Today, it offers year-round classes and workshops taught by experienced artists and craftspeople, many of whom are from Arkansas and recognized for their work well beyond our state.
What makes this place so special is that it's not just somewhere to admire beautiful artwork. You can shop for unique, handmade items created by talented artists and craftspeople, or you can roll up your sleeves and learn how to make something yourself. Whether you're looking for a one-of-a-kind gift or wanting to try something new, the Arkansas Craft School has something for everyone.
Whether you've been creating art for years or have never picked up a paintbrush, there's something here worth exploring.
You Might Be Surprised at Everything You Can Learn
When I started looking at everything the Arkansas Craft School offers, I was surprised by just how many different types of classes and workshops they have. And we're not just talking about painting and pottery!
Pottery and Ceramics
Have you ever wanted to try making something on a pottery wheel? The Craft School offers pottery classes where you can learn to work with clay, shape pieces on the wheel, and explore different ceramic techniques.
They even have a fully equipped ceramics studio with nine pottery wheels, a kiln, and a separate glazing area. Some classes are designed specifically for beginners who just want to give it a try, while others allow students to develop their skills over time.
Woodworking and Woodturning
For anyone who enjoys woodworking, this is a pretty impressive opportunity to have right here in Mountain View. The school's woodworking studio includes multiple wood lathes and specialized equipment for turning, carving, and other woodworking projects.
Depending on the workshop, students can explore everything from basic woodturning to more detailed carving techniques. This is especially appealing for people who have always wanted to learn woodworking but don't have the space or equipment to do it at home.
Blacksmithing and Bladesmithing
Now this is something you don't find in every small town! The Arkansas Craft School has a separate forging facility at the Windgate Craft Complex on Knox Avenue.
Students can learn traditional blacksmithing techniques, work with hot metal, and even take classes in knife making and bladesmithing. Imagine spending the day learning how to forge your own knife from a piece of steel.
It's the kind of experience that could be a great activity for someone visiting Mountain View, but it's also an opportunity for residents to learn a skill they may have never had access to before.
Glass Art and Jewelry Making
The Craft School also offers opportunities to learn glass beadmaking, lampworking, and jewelry making. Students can explore how glass is shaped and worked into decorative pieces, or learn techniques used to create handmade jewelry.
These are the kinds of classes that could easily turn a hobby into something more. And for someone who already makes jewelry or works with glass, having access to experienced instructors and specialized equipment is a wonderful resource.
Weaving, Fiber Arts, and Textiles
Traditional crafts have always been part of the Ozarks, and I love that the Arkansas Craft School is helping keep these skills alive. The school has a textiles studio with 16 looms and equipment for weaving and other fiber arts.
Workshops can include weaving, crochet, and other textile projects. For someone who loves quilting, sewing, weaving, or working with fibers, this is another way to connect with people who share those interests.
Painting, Drawing, and Other Visual Arts
If painting is more your style, there are opportunities for that too. The school offers visual arts workshops that can include watercolor, acrylic painting, printmaking, and other creative projects.
Some classes focus on learning a particular technique, while others are centered around creating a specific piece of artwork. It's a great way to spend a few hours doing something different, especially if you've always wanted to try painting but weren't sure where to begin.
Photography and Songwriting
The Arkansas Craft School even has a digital photography studio designed to help artists photograph their work. And because this is Mountain View, it probably shouldn't surprise anyone that songwriting is part of the creative opportunities too!
The school has offered songwriting circles where musicians and writers can share their work, exchange ideas, and learn from one another. It's another example of how music and the arts are such a big part of life in our community.
You Don't Have to Take a Class to Use the Studios
This is something I think a lot of people may not realize. The Arkansas Craft School has a Studio Pass Program that allows individuals to use certain studios and equipment for their own projects when the spaces aren't being used for scheduled classes.
Think about someone who loves pottery but doesn't have room for a kiln at home, or someone who enjoys weaving but doesn't own a loom. Having access to a shared creative space can make it much easier to continue a hobby without investing in all the equipment yourself.
Studio passes are currently listed at $20 per day for several of the school's studios, including ceramics, textiles, visual arts, and digital photography. There are guidelines, additional material fees for certain activities, and availability requirements, so it's best to check with the school before planning a visit.
For artists who live in Mountain View, this is one of the school's most valuable resources.
Classes for Kids and Young Artists
Another thing I really appreciate is that the Arkansas Craft School isn't just for adults. They offer programs specifically designed for children and teenagers, giving younger students an opportunity to try different art forms and learn from experienced instructors.
Their youth programming has included Young Artists Pottery, Young Artists Blacksmithing, woodworking, painting, and summer art camps. The school has also offered programs aimed at making art education more accessible to children in rural communities.
I think it's wonderful that kids in our area have the chance to experience things like pottery, woodworking, and blacksmithing at such a young age. You never know when one class might introduce a child to something they'll enjoy for the rest of their life.
More Than a Hobby: Opportunities for Serious Artists
For people who are interested in taking their creative skills further, the Arkansas Craft School has also developed a career education program.
Their Certificate of Competency in Craft Arts is designed for students who want more extensive instruction and studio experience. The published program includes 412 hours of combined learning and studio practice, with areas of concentration such as ceramics, artistic blacksmithing, fine woodworking, jewelry making, and textiles.
Students also receive instruction in art history and basic business skills. I think this is particularly interesting for someone who dreams of turning a creative hobby into a small business.
Whether it's selling handmade pottery, creating jewelry, or producing custom woodwork, the opportunity to develop both artistic and business skills right here in Mountain View is something worth knowing about. Course offerings depend on enrollment and instructor availability, so interested students should contact the school for current program information.
Events That Bring Artists and the Community Together
The Arkansas Craft School also plays a role in bringing people together through special events and community activities.
One example is Art Walk Around the Square, which celebrates the creativity of our local artists and downtown community. Events like this give people a chance to meet artists, see their work, explore downtown shops, and discover just how much artistic talent we have in this area.
The school also hosts fundraising activities, including its annual gala, along with special workshops and seasonal classes throughout the year.
And because classes change regularly, there's always a reason to check their schedule to see what's coming up. You might find a glass beadmaking workshop one weekend, a watercolor class the next, or a special project that would be fun to do with a friend.
You can explore upcoming opportunities on the Arkansas Craft School website.
Supporting Veterans and Our Community
The Craft School's involvement goes beyond teaching classes. The school has also developed programs focused on making creative experiences available to veterans and young people in our rural communities.
Its Veterans Healing Arts Program brings veterans, artisans, and behavioral health professionals together through creative activities. The school has also worked to make art education more accessible to young people who might not otherwise have the opportunity to participate.
As a nonprofit, these programs are an important part of the school's mission and another reason it's such a valuable organization for our community.
Stop In and Shop for Something Handmade
Even if you're not interested in taking a class, the Arkansas Craft School is worth a visit. Their Craft Market features handmade items created by students, instructors, and artists. If you enjoy finding unique gifts or supporting people who create things by hand, this is a great place to look.
And if you're shopping for someone who loves being creative, the school also offers gift cards that can be used toward classes, studio passes, and Craft Market purchases. Sometimes the best gift isn't another thing to put on a shelf. It's the opportunity to learn something new.
Why This Matters for People Thinking About Moving to Mountain View
I talk to a lot of people who are considering making Mountain View their home, and one thing I've learned is that people aren't always just looking for a house. They're looking for a lifestyle. Some want acreage and room to spread out. Others want to be close to the river or enjoy the outdoors. And then there are people who are drawn here because of our music, our artists, and the creative community that has been part of Mountain View for generations.
For someone who loves art, the Arkansas Craft School is one more reason to consider calling Mountain View home. You can spend your mornings enjoying the Ozarks, take an afternoon pottery or woodworking class, meet people who share your interests, and become part of a community where traditional craftsmanship is still appreciated. And I think that's one of the things that makes Mountain View so special.
We may be a small town, but there are so many opportunities here to learn, create, and get involved.
